Will this slow down my internet?

No, it will actually speed it up slightly. The DNS servers we use are meant to be fast and encrypted; there is less processing compute needed. This means you get your results back faster.

Will it block nudity on Netflix, Apple, Prime or Hulu?

No, sites like YouTube and Disney, which have both good and bad programming, are not blocked. Slower options exist for this, but it’s very difficult to censor bad ideas which can be more harmful than bad images.

Can you do my kids’ phone without them knowing?

Yes, it is unnoticeable for the most part. If you have access to their phones, it is a good idea. It may also save you from phishing attacks since many of those domains are also blocked.

Can you do my phone or tablet?

Yes, both Android and Apple phones and tablets can use a private DNS.

My elderly mom keeps signing up for scams, will this prevent her?

So does mine. And yes, this will help prevent that really bad ones, but the normal medical ones will still get to her.

I have mobile internet. Will that work?

Yes, Cable, Fiber, DSL, Mobile, dial-up, Starlink, etc., can all have DNS changed.

If I change my internet provider or move homes, do I need to have it set up again?

Yes, but if we just did it for you, email us and we will do it again for free.

I have Rogers Canada for my Internet service provider will it work for me?

Yes, there are 2 ways to make Rogers work. Rogers mobile internet can be activated fine, along with some of the older modems. However the newer modem router combo usually does not allow for DNS choice (manual DNS) So the work around is using a Wifi router with the Rogers Modem in bridge mode. Not hard to set up and worth it. Plus you get a better wifi coverage. Here is the router I router I recommend, Deco Mesh TP Link. For example Deco M4 two pack from Amazon.ca.

How long does it take?

We set aside 1 hour, but it rarely takes more than 30 minutes.

Can my kids get around it?

Not easily, but there is always that one kid who can. Out of 100 people, only one or two will get past it.

I think someone is getting around it?

Will it block ‘mature’ content or sexually disordered topics on Prime or YouTube?

No, it blocks at the domain level, so sites that have both good and bad things on them it usually does not block (for example, YouTube, Netflix, Disney, Hulu, etc., are not blocked). The best way to block content on these sites is through user passwords on the app or the TV. It’s not perfect, but there’s no reliable way to block harmful ideas in content or lies presented as truths. Parents just need to be present and control intake.

Can I force a computer to use another DNS and bypass the Hearth Shield DNS?

Yes, but most people will not know how, and the ones who can figure that stuff out would find a way anyway. If, for example, you enjoy gambling and have a site that you trust, you can set up a computer to bypass the DNS. We can help you do that.

Does it only work when we are at home on the Wi-Fi?

Yes, anyone using your Wi-Fi to connect to the internet will be forced through the good DNS.

What happens if I have a vacation rental and they reset my modem?

Most people don’t know how to do a hard reset on a router or modem, so you are okay. But if they have physical access to it and know how, then they can remove the DNS settings that Hearth Shield installed. Try locking it in an owner’s closet and back up the settings. We can help you back up the settings.

Do I need to buy a monthly subscription?

No, it is one and done. Many people watch and learn how to do it themselves during the install.

I cannot afford it?

We set the price below the average one-month cost of internet on purpose so people could afford it. But if you or someone you know cannot afford it, please email us. We have free time slots each week. We don’t want affordability to be a factor for family protection, so please email us.
